At LiteracyPlanet, updating our killer literacy e-learning -and heavily Flash- program to HTML5 gifted us with an opportunity to make it more interactive, fast-paced, educationally effective and with a much more streamlined and cost-effective production process to boot. The first place to start was updating “Sight Words” with new content and flash card games.
Early storyboarding was necessary to present concepts not only to dev’s and stakeholders, but to ensure the educational value was verified by researchers at Macquarie University.
Reducing friction points and speeding up play was key to upping engagement- here’s an example of how replacing the text-heavy static instructions with a count-in style intro helped to do that.
The new parallax-scrolling backgrounds are simpler, brighter, and pulled focus to the characters so the interaction is more intuitive, and feedback more immediate and delightful.
I concepted, prototyped and managed the design of 4 game types for both tablet/mobile app and desktop, resulting in the optimised production of games and more educationally-sound SightWords exercises.
